Why I Love Functional Fitness: Functional fitness can be really wonderful for a lot of reasons but I, ultimately, land on two:

• The variety: By using movements collected from different sports/domains, functional fitness really challenges folks to work on all areas of their fitness. In turn, this translates to more physical preparedness in tasks outside the gym rather than simply getting bigger for getting bigger’s sake. Plus, it keeps things interesting and always gives you something to work on. (Muscle ups someday)

• The community: Folks come to the gym to improve and it’s really inspiring (if not infectious) to be surrounded by such strong, goal-oriented people. Since everything we do is modifiable, everyone has the opportunity to progress along their own journey and there are few things more rewarding than sharing in the progress of friends. It’s also nice to know you aren’t hurting alone. :’)

Favorite Movement: My favorite lift is deadlift. My favorite calisthenic is burpees. My favorite cardio is running (but also the assault bike but also I might be sick in the head).

Fun Fact: I like wearing donut themed merchandise more than I like eating donuts. Basically I’m a fraud.

Credentials: CrossFit Level 1, CrossFit Kids, CrossFit Scaling Certificate

I love, love, love CFPR! I’ve never been bored during a functional fitness workout because there’s so much variation. Even more than the workouts, my favorite part of the gym is hanging out with all the amazing people here. I try to be the most supportive, encouraging person you’ll meet that day. When I’m not at the gym, you’ll find me working at Phinney Books – or at home with a good book and a glass of wine!

KATELYN NIES

CO-OWNER, GROUP CLASS COACH

Credentials: CrossFit Level 2, USA Weightlifting Level 1, Licensed Mental Health Therapist

I like to blend fitness knowledge with my education and practice as a mental health professional to provide a welcoming, empathic coaching experience with a splash of humor to keep things light and fun! I believe that enjoyment is at the heart of having a healthy, sustainable, and positive relationship with exercise and your body and conduct my classes with this in mind. In addition to being a coach, I am a co-owner of CFPR, and enjoy taking part in classes regularly. My favorite movements are the Olympic lifts (Clean & Jerk and Snatch) and I love to take my fitness outside with hiking, backpacking, kayaking, and snowboarding. I proudly identify as queer and love spending time with my husband, Christopher, and our sweet dogs, Whiskey & Riley (Rye for short).

GROUP CLASS COACH

Credentials: CrossFit Level 2, Licensed Massage Therapist, B.S., Exercise Science, ACSM-CPT, NSCA-CSCS

Why I Love Functional Fitness: 2 main reasons (amongst 1000s of others):
1) You get the most bang for your buck. It’s always different and you get to improve on every aspect of fitness (strength, gymnastic, endurance, high intensity, etc etc.) all in a 60 minute class.
2) Through CrossFit, I’ve met the most amazing people that I want to hang out with everyday for the rest of my life. And I’ve found this to be true no matter where I travel around the world.

Favorite Movement: I never have a good answer for this. Every movement is always hard. I’m “better” at some movements than others, but it doesn’t mean I necessarily like them. Maybe heavy-ish snatch? It requires a combination of technique, strength, mobility, and explosive power.

Fun Fact: I have a blog site on WordPress about Tim Tam Slams, but I never wrote anything on it. I do love Tim Tams tho.

ERIKA STANLEY

GROUP CLASS COACH

Credentials: Crossfit Level 1

I joined CrossFit eight years ago as a way to improve my running, but quickly realized Crossfit is way more fun and effective than running. What keeps me motivated is one- how strong I feel, and two, my desire to ski, hike, and travel into my eighties. My fitness philosophy is to set a goal, hit it, and do it again. You’re never too old to hit a PR or learn a new skill. Right now I’m determined to walk on my hands. I’ll get it eventually.

Why I Love Functional Fitness: Outside of playing hockey and skating I could never really say before that I loved working out. But that changed when I joined CFPR. I love the supportive community environment, the way we have fun trying new things, the constant variation of movements, how I’m able to press the stress or worries of the day into a barbell and transform them into something positive, and that I’m healthier all-around. It’s also just fun to lift heavy things.

Favorite Movement: The deadlift.

Fun Fact: One of my first functional fitness goals was to be able to deadlift my husband’s body weight. I can do that now!

GROUP CLASS COACH

Why I Love Functional Fitness: So I have two main answers to this question:

One: It’s awesome that all you have to do is show up and someone else has come up with the programming that needs to be done. They keep it varied and interesting, which helps prevent falling into a routine where you are just doing the same thing over and over. This keeps things interesting and also forces your body to be constantly adapting to new stimuli, which is highly effective for building and maintaining fitness.

Two: I think the group setting is great because not only do you get to make friends with cool, new people, but they also can hold you accountable and I think it’s just more motivating to be in a group setting. I also have a bit of a competitive personality and find it highly motivational to be surrounded by others who are sharing the pain !

Favorite Movement: I think my favorite overall type movements are gymnastics on the bar and the rings. Getting muscle ups was a really fun journey and I also just really like the idea of body weight exercises. Hopefully a strict muscle up is in my future someday!

Close runner-up goes to clean and jerks. It is such a complex movement that is fun to work on and feels like something you can continue making progress on almost forever in pursuit of doing it perfectly.

Fun Fact: The world record beer mile is 4:28 which is insane
